Five percent of children under the age of 5 show signs of stuttering before they reach elementary school. For some unknown reason, about two thirds of these children grow out of the speech disorder by the time they turn 8. The other half is not so lucky. Why some children recover and others do not is a mystery that Purdue professors Anne Smith and Christine Weber-Fox (MS LA’85, PhD LA’89) are trying to solve.
